Review: Perfect Body by Roe Gallo, M.A.
ProMotion Publishing, 220 pp., $14.95

Review by G. Pless, Contributing Editor to the
Living Nutrition Magazine

Eat just fruit?! How can anybody eat just fruit? This was the predominant question running through my mind as I began reading Perfect Body. Even a dyed-in-the-wool omnivore like myself was taken aback by the well presented facts and case stories presented in Gallo?s newest and best book so far on the care and feeding of the human machine - not to mention the knockout picture on the cover! It?s hard to believe that she is almost 48 years old! Roe Gallo goes into passionate detail about how human physiology demands a clean and supportive diet, and she gives us inspirational examples of how our bodies can recover from the common diseases of our society., e.g., cancer, heartburn, diabetes, arthritis, ulcerative colitis, atherosclerosis, etc.

Roe is a vibrant example herself of how her philosophy, formulated through years of research, trial, error and personal triumph, can save lives. She writes: ?When I was 25 years old I was told that I was going to die from either asthma, or the drugs for the asthma.? It was at this point that she took her life into her own hands and researched every book on health and diet she could find until she found several that talked about healing the body through fasting. Then willfully, against every one?s advice, she stopped taking drugs that were slowly killing her, and fasted herself to health. Roe chronicles her miraculous recovery and her life long pursuit of optimal well-being. Perfect Body gives convincing testament to our bodies? astounding ability to regenerate itself. Roe?s knowledge on the subject matter is readily apparent and supported by her Masters degree in Health Communications. Her book is informative, logically structured, and speaks clearly to the lay person, allowing us to fully appreciate the complexities of our physiology, and the simplicity of its care.

The case stories she relates will convert even the most ardent disbeliever and junk food junkie to a healthful diet and lifestyle. What provoked me the most was the absolute simplicity of the solution she presents for most of our ills. One has to stop and ask, ?Well, if it is that easy why isn?t everyone doing this?? Roe tells us that we must first get the right information, then believe it, then live it. She readily admits that it is easier said than done, and offers us a work book style journal to assist our transition from the SAD (standard American diet) to a natural one that will cleanse and revitalize us from a cellular level.

Roe?s approach to health is not one dimensional. She doesn't state that if you do this one thing you will be cured. She is not offering an easy way out. She wants us to adopt new attitudes, ways of thinking, eating and exercising; to change our entire lifestyle to encompass new ways of relating to ourselves and to our environment. Roe neatly ties care for our bodies and minds into care for our planet and fellow living beings in a thought provoking way. I was repeatedly impressed with her wholistic understanding of our nature, both internal and external. In a world of instant gratification, fads, and band-aid fixes, Perfect Body offers us a way back to our natural state of health. A state of health intended for us by our creator, by the very design of our machine. By presenting us with an easily understandable and realistically achievable common sense approach, Roe is well on her way to inspiring a health revolution, the likes of which we have never seen.
